- Terazije is one of the central squares of Belgrade. It covers the area from Sremska Street to Kralja Milana Street. The square began to form in the first half of the 19th century.
- The name of the square comes from the term used for the Turkish water supply towers, which they called “water terazije” (“water scales”). One such tower was placed on the spot where the Terazije fountain is today.
- Until the mid-1860s, there was only humble ground-floor or one-storey buildings at Terazije. At the end of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century, Terazije became the center of social life in Belgrade – famous hotels, cafes and shops were now all located here.
- The Terazije Square got its current appearance during the last reconstruction in 1947, designed by the architect Nikola Dobrović.
