The first street lighting in Belgrade was introduced in 1830, during the reign of Prince Miloš, when the city was illuminated by gas lanterns.
After returning from his scientific travels, Stanojević became actively involved in solving the problem of public lighting. According to his designs, the first public power station in Serbia began operating in 1893 in Dorćol, making Belgrade one of the first European cities to be illuminated by electricity.
Through later expansions, the power station followed the city’s growth, and in 1928 a new building was constructed, which today houses the Museum of Science and Technology.
