- Without a doubt one of the most recognizable images of Belgrade Fortress is Zindan Gate – a gate adorned with striking semicircular towers.
- The complex was erected in the mid-15th century as a pre-fortification to protect the main entrance to the Upper Town.
- During the great Austrian reconstruction works in the first half of the 18th century, the Zindan Gate Complex was thoroughly rebuilt.
- During the 18th century, the towers were used as dungeons. In Turkish, the word for the dungeon is “zindan,” which is how the complex got its name.
