  • Situated around 18 km from the center of Belgrade, Avala, with its height of 511m, is the lowest mountain in central Serbia.
  • The whole mountain complex was declared a national park in 1936.
  • In the Middle Ages,the town of Žrnov was located on top of Avala. It was surrounded by a fortress, from which the access roads to Belgrade were controlled.
  • In 1938, the Monument to the Unknown Hero was erected on the top of the mountain. The work of famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović, it is dedicated to the heroes of the First World War.
  • In the immediate vicinity is the Monument to Soviet war veterans who suffered a plane crash here in 1964.
  • Towards Belgrade, in the village of Jajinci, there is a Memorial Park at the place where the Germans shot about 80,000 people during the Second World War.
  • From the top of Avala TV Tower, there is a view of the whole of Šumadija.
