  • The Church of the Ascension in Belgrade was built in 1863, and the order for its construction was given in 1860 by Prince Mihailo Obrenović and Mihailo II Jovanović, Metropolitan of Belgrade.
  • It was designed in the prevailing style of the period, the Romanticism. The church was patterend after the old Serbian monasteries, especially the Ravanica.
  • The Church has a rich treasury, which includes the collections of icons, old books and goldworks and other objects from the 19th century.
  • It was severely damaged during the Second World War. A memorial cross commemorating the victims was placed in the churchyard.
  • As the church is dedicated to the Feast of the Ascension, called in Serbian Spasovdan (“Salvation day”), which is also an official slava of the city of Belgrade, a traditional procession celebrating the day through the city’s main streets starts and ends at the Church of the Ascension.
