  • The cross at the Mali Pijac (Little Marketplace) was one of the first monuments erected in Belgrade. It was placed there in 1862 and today it stands in the park near hotel Bristol.
  • The monument was financed by Ćira Hristić, a merchant from Belgrade, in honour of the unknown heroes who died during the liberation of Belgrade in 1806. Cross-shaped monuments were erected at the time of the formation of the Serbian state as a symbol of the victory of Christianity over the Turks.
  • As the only preserved original example of a monument of this type, it is a material testimony to the construction of public monuments in a still artistically undeveloped environment such as 19th century Belgrade.
