ORIGINS
The tradition of this prominent institution dates back to 1731 when the first school was founded on this same spot. Its goal was to provide a fine education in Latin to Orthodox Serbs in the Habsburg Monarchy.

FACTS & NUMBERS

  • In 1789, a new school building was erected, which housed the Roman Catholic Grammar School for a period of time.
  • In 1810, greatly due to the generous contributions of local merchant Sava Vuković, it was yet again re-established as the Serbian Orthodox Grammar School. This held great importance in strengthening the Serbian national identity.
  • The school was terribly damaged in 1849 during the bombings of Novi Sad, when the Hungarian rebels destroyed most of the town from their stronghold at the Petrovaradin fortress.
  • The gymnasium building, as it is today, was built in 1900 according to the project of architect Vladimir Nikolić and thanks to the donations of Baron Miloš Bajić.
