  • Knez Mihailova Street is the main pedestrian zone in the city. It is protected by law as one of the oldest and most valuable landmarks in the city.
  • It features a number of representative buildings and civic houses built in the second half of the 19th century.
  • The street is named after Mihailo Obrenović (1823-1868), Prince of Serbia, whose monument adorns the plateau on the nearby Republic Square.
  • In 1867, a regulation plan by Emilijan Josimović, the first modern Serbian urbanist, was implemented in Knez Mihailova Street. That same year, Prince Mihailo received the keys to the Belgrade Fortress from Ali-Riz Pasha, which marked the end of Turkish rule in Serbia.
