  • Košutnjak is a park-forest and one of the most popular recreational places in Belgrade. It covers an area of 330 ha (820 acres). The dense forest is intersected by numerous paths.
  • The name is derived from the medieval hunting forests of the Serbian nobility, meaning doe’s breeder (in Serbian, košuta means doe, hind). Does used to live freely in the park until the First World War.
  • In 1903, former royal hunting ground was opened for public, making Košutanjak a recreational area of Belgrade. At the foot of the hill, where the hunting ground of the Obrenović dynasty used to be, there is a spring and the fountain called Hajdučka česma, built in the 18th century.
  • Historically, Košutnjak is known as the place where Prince Mihailo Obrenović III was assasinated, on May 29, 1868.
