  • The Military Museum in Belgrade is located within the Belgrade Fortress complex, in a building erected in 1924 for the needs of the Military Geographical Institute.
  • The Museum was founded by the Decree of Prince Milan Obrenović in 1878, and the first exhibition was opened in 1904 on the occasion of the centenary of the First Serbian Uprising. Museum was then placed in a humble building from Turkish period in the Upper Town of the Belgrade Fortress.
  • The Museum building was destroyed in the First World War, yet the Museum was reopened in 1937 in two other buildings.
  • During Second World War, the Germans took some very rare and valuable items from the museum’s collection.
  • In 1961, in the renovated building of the former Military Geographical Institute, a new display was opened by President Josip Broz Tito.
  • The Museum collections include weapons, uniforms, flags, decorations, archival documents, works of art, photographs, models and more. A part of the exhibition is also placed in front of the Museum’s entrance.
