  • The monument dedicated to the great Serbian writer, educator and the reformer was erected in 1914. It was built as a result of the initiative of the Serbian Literary Cooperative and famous writer Јоvan Skerlić, an admirer of Obradović.
  • The idea of erecting a monument to Dositej Obradović dates back to the mid 19th century, and became relevant again in 1911 on the occasion of 100 year anniversary of Dositej’s death.
  • The bronze figure of Dositej was made by the sculptor Rudolf Valdec. It depicts him as a “hero of the pen, who travels the world in search for knowledge”.
  • The monument was originally located in front of the “Serbian Crown” hotel, and then it was moved to the Academic Park as a pair to the monument dedicated to the great Serbian scientist Josif Pančić.
