  • The Great Gunpowder Magazine was built in the 18th century and designed to be a dry, safe place to store gunpowder.
  • The Austrians built the Great Gunpowder Magazine in just two years, from 1718 to 1720. In the mid-18th century, a very strong protective wall was built around the magazine.
  • The magazine contained two rooms, both of which were 400 m² in size.
  • Today, the great hallway and the first hall have been restored, and inside they contain the oldest Roman monuments in Belgrade.
  • The most famous monument on display here is Jonah’s sarcophagus, which dates back to the fourth century AD and was found in Belgrade in 1885.
  • The sarcophagus is adorned with carvings of Christian symbols, which confirms the early presence of Christianity in Belgrade. This is why the sarcophagus is often called the Holy Stone of Belgrade.
