  • The Monument of Gratitude to France was erected as a sign of the Serbian people’s appreciation for the help they received from France during World War One.
  • It was officially unveiled in 1930.
  • The inscription on the monument reads: “We love France the way it loved us, 1914–1918.”
  • On top of the monument stands a bronze statue of a woman with a sword, posed as if running. This statue symbolizes France. On the sides of the base you can see carvings that represent the military collaboration between the two countries and the help France provided in educating Serbian youth.
  • The monument was created by famous Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Meštrović.
