The Platoneum building got its present-day outlook in the last quarter of the 19th century, most likely by the design of architect Aleksandar Bugarski. There was an earlier house which used to stand here as early as in the 18th century and all the later reconstructions and extensions of the building were done over its foundations.

FACTS & NUMBERS

  • The house belonged to the Servijski family who sold it to the Bishop of Bačka Plato Atanacković in 1861.
  • To this day, this building is known as ‘Platoneum’ after the name of Bishop Plato, who was a great benefactor of the Serbian educational system.
  • During the course of time, many important religious and secular institutions were all located at their premises.
  • Today, the Vojvodina Branch of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) is situated at the Platoneum.
