- The museum is located in the building of the former Grammar school, which was constructed in 1857
- The museum building was proclaimed a cultural monument of great importance in 1979
- In 1906, a more systematic approach was initiated by the Grammar school professors towards the collecting of valuable objects
- After the establishment of the Šabac National Library and Reading Room in 1928, a museum collection was also established under its patronage on March 20th, 1934
- In 1955, the City Museum was established as a separate institution and in 1960 it changed its name to the National museum of Šabac
