- When the Romans first arrived on the banks of the Sava River in the 1st century BC, they built a city called Sirmium, which is the modern-day Sremska Mitrovica
- They divided the conquered territory of Illyricum into two provinces – Dalmatia and Pannonia, and the Šabac region was a part of the latter
- In the mid 3rd century AD, attacks from barbarian tribes were frequent in Pannonia, resulting in the destruction of Roman settlements and rustic villas
- In the mid 5th century, the Huns raided these areas; at the end of the 6th century the Avars invaded Pannonia, occupied Sirmium and brought its existence to an end
