  • The name “Kalemegdan” is derived from Turkish and means “city field.” It was once an empty space that separated Belgrade town from the fortress.
  • The first plans for the transformation of Kalemegdan Park date back to 1867.
  • The park consists of two parts: Great Kalemegdan, which was built as a city park, and Little Kalemegdan, which at the end of the 19th century offered public entertainment in the form of circuses and amusement parks.
  • The Fisherman Fountain has adorned Kalemegdan since the beginning of the 20th century. Interestingly, an identical fountain can be found at Jesuit Square in Zagreb.
