  • Stambol Gate got its name because of its position on the main road towards Constantinople (Istanbul), with Stambol being a shortened name for Istanbul.
  • It was built on the site of the former “Constantinople Gate,” which was erected during the great Austrian reconstruction of the fortress and was destroyed during the middle of the 18th century.
  • Over Stambol Gate, during the 19th century, there was a mast with a Turkish flag. Today, a flag bearing the coat of arms of Belgrade flies proudly on this mast.
  • Inside the gate, on both sides, there are two rooms that used to accommodate the guards. Today, this space is occupied by a gallery and a souvenir shop. In one of these spaces is a display of costumes and interesting objects made using old artisanal techniques.
