  • The memorial park preserves the memory of innocent victims who were murdered in October 1941, when members of the regular German Army – the Wehrmacht – killed nearly 3,000 civilians in only 3 days in Kragujevac and its surroundings.
  • After the war, in 1953, the site of these horrific executions was turned into a 352-hectare memorial park containing the 21st of October Museum, various monuments and the mass graves in which the victims are buried.
  • Ten of the mass graves within the memorial park have been marked with artistic sculptures, among them the Monument to Executed Pupils and Teachers – which is commonly known as Interrupted Flight and has become a symbol of both this tragedy and the city of Kragujevac.
  • The October in Kragujevac Memorial Park and everything within it pays tribute to the victims of the massacre and serves as a warning for us all, while also calling for peace and tolerance.
