  • Zemun became a part of Belgrade in 1934. Before that, it was a separate town in the southeastern part of Srem.
  • Traces that testify to the existence of settlements on the territory of Zemun date back to the Neolithic era. In Roman times, Zemun was called Taurunum.
  • Slavs had changed the name of the settlement to Zemun (Zemlin), which is believed to be derived from the word zemlja, meaning soil.
  • The remains of the old town and the Millennium Tower on Gardoš have invaluable historical and cultural significance and represent the most widely recognized symbol of Zemun.
  • There is a number of important cultural institutions in Zemun, such as the Zemun Homeland Museum, “St. Sava” library and the Opera and Theatre Madlenianum.
